Closed Loop Geothermal Systems

Closed loop geothermal systems have proven to be the most efficient, less maintenance, and most dependable of the type of geothermal available in New England.

Cushing and Sons has successfully completed IGSHPA (Int’l Ground Source Heat Pump Association) diffusity testing on sites. This is when a borehole with Utube is installed and subjected to heat transfer for 48 hours. Using the collected data, the number of feet required per 12,000 BTU is determined. A ton of heat load is 12,000 BTU.

In central New England, heat pump manufacturers usually use 150-175 lineal feet per ton of borehole to be installed. We install the borehole, the geopipe Utube, high solids commercial grade grout mix, testing, flushing and horizontal runs to the house for the HVAC installer to connect to the heat pump equipment.

The average size for a residence is 4-6 tons, the average size for commercial applications is 10-15 tons. We have worked with sizes up to 320 tons. Closed loop systems generally require less maintenance and the boreholes are buried below grade.
